2 to serve time for abduction

Two Powell County residents were sentenced to prison time for an incident where they detained a store employee following a theft.

James Mahan, 34, and Charlotte Smith, 29, both pleaded guilty to reduced charges last month in Clark Circuit Court.

Thursday morning, the two were sentenced according to the plea agreement by Clark Circuit Judge Jean Chenault Logue.

Mahan was sentenced to five years each for unlawful imprisonment and second-degree robbery, which will run concurrently. S

mith was sentenced to three years for unlawful imprisonment.

Smith told Logue in August she was shoplifting items in the Dollar General on West Lexington Avenue Nov. 30, 2016, when she was confronted by a store employee.

As she left the store, Mahan said she was tackled by the employee.

Mahan helped free Smith before jumping in their car. The employee followed and got in their car as they drove away.

According to court documents, Smith threatened to kill the employee.

Mahan said the employee jumped out of the car when they stopped at a stop sign.

Both were arrested in Powell County.
