John Wall can score. So can Eric Bledsoe.
Wall gained national attention following his performance in Kentucky’s win over Connecticut last week, but Bledsoe took his turn in the scoring department in Kentucky’s first “real” road test at Indiana Saturday.
Although Wall had 11 points and dished out eight assists, the Wildcats needed another player to step up and take the pressure off Wall, the team’s point guard. Bledsoe, Wall’s sidekick in the backcourt, picked up the slack.
Bledsoe scored 23 points and drained four shots from long range. Bledsoe, battling a nagging injury, had a monstrous dunk, displaying his athletic ability in front of a hostile crowd in Bloomington.
Kentucky coach John Calipari was especially pleased to see Bledsoe take charge to keep his team undefeated at 10-0 on the season.
“I’m just happy for him,” he said. “He hasn’t played with any kind of aggressiveness or assertiveness, almost a casual game at times in the last two weeks. Part of that is because he’s been injured. When he went up to dunk that ball, you don’t understand how happy I was. Then I saw him limp, and that’s why I took him out. He’s been probably 80 percent on that one leg for the last three weeks and he’s playing through it.”
Even though the final score indicated the Cats won with ease, it didn’t come easy. The Hoosiers raced out to a 12-4 lead, forcing the Wildcats to play from behind for most of the first half. The early deficit was a good experience for Kentucky to overcome on the road leading up to the Southeastern Conference portion of the schedule.
“I was so happy that Indiana came out and just tried to run us off the floor, made every shot, and played with unbelievable energy,” he said.
What followed was Kentucky’s ability to regain the lead, take control and run the Hoosiers off their own home court. The Wildcats not only handled adversity on the court, but off the court, too.
“We did great,” Calipari said. “I know you all think I’m crazy and that I just say stuff. Them coming out of the gate and trying to punch us in the mouth was the best thing for our team and for us to learn what we were.”
Although the entire team responded, it was Bledsoe who made the Cats go when it counted.
“Eric Bledsoe wanted to make a statement today and he certainly made it,” Calipari said.
