Eric Hunter, a long-time firefighter and paramedic, will serve as the new chief of Winchester Fire-EMS, filling a vacancy created when former Chief Daniel Castle retired last year.
The Winchester Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the promotion Tuesday night. Hunter will formally assume his responsibilities on Feb. 7., and he is predicting a busy schedule in coming months.
“We’ve got a lot of projects that are in the process right now, and we have to continue several that are upcoming,” he said. “And of course our volume doesn’t really go down.”
The commission interviewed five internal candidates for the position. Hunter, 50, joined the department in 1984. Before the promotion, he had served in the rank of major for more than a decade.
At Tuesday’s meeting, officials described the promotion as an important decision for city government and commended Hunter for having leadership qualities and experience. Hunter focused praise on the department overall.
“We have a good staff, and they do a tremendous job,” he said. “The other part about it is we are always looking to improve the department and a lot of that comes from staff themselves. They come up with ideas or see things.”
