Pellet gun fired at Clark County school bus

March 9, 2010

A juvenile may be responsible for shooting at a Clark County school bus Monday afternoon with a pellet gun.

Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue Jr. said this morning that the shot was fired about 4:10 p.m. Monday near the Yorktowne Trailer Park.

No one was injured on the bus, Perdue said. The bus monitor was struck by an object. The monitor, though, was wearing a heavy coat and was not hurt.

Clark County Schools Operations Director Paul Christy said the monitor did not know whether she was struck by the pellet or a piece of glass from the window.

Clark County Schools Superintendent Elaine Farris said there were children on the bus at the time, but she reiterated that no one was injured.

The pellet, though, shattered a window on the bus.

Perdue and Farris said there is a suspect and that the suspect may be a juvenile.

“We are pretty sure that we may have a suspect, and we are continuing our investigation,” Farris said. “Whoever is it at fault, if it was a student, will be disciplined severely. We take the safety of our students seriously.”

Perdue said his staff was not notified of the incident, but began checking into rumors around 9 p.m. Monday. A detective went to the bus garage first thing this morning to begin the official investigation, he said.

The delay in notification of the sheriff’s office was due to school officials being in transit to Mason County for Clark County’s regional championship basketball game, according to Operations Director Paul Christy.

“I was on my way to Mason County to the game when I was first contacted. As soon as it was determined that a firearm was used, I immediately contacted our SROs (school resource officers) and the Sheriff’s Office, to retrieve the audio an video evidence from the bus,” said Christy. “Using the audio and video it is our intention to prosecute this to the fullest extent of the law to further insure the safety of our students.”

“From what sketchy information I have, (the suspect) probably is a juvenile,” Perdue said. “It’s a pretty isolated incident. Usually, the only calls we have on a school bus is a kid being rowdy that they want off.”
