Teenager charged in school bus shooting

March 10, 2010

A 16-year-old is facing felony charges after shooting a school bus during a game with another student.

The Clark County juvenile was charged with first-degree wanton endangerment after he confessed Tuesday afternoon, Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue Jr. said.

The juvenile, who was not identified, was lodged in Fayette County’s juvenile detention center.

The incident happened shortly after 4 p.m. when the bus was near Yorktowne Trailer Park. A pellet shattered a window on the bus, but no one was injured. The bus monitor said she was struck by something, but didn’t know whether it was the pellet or a piece of glass.

Detectives interviewed the juvenile and his father Tuesday afternoon, Perdue said, after detectives took statements from several other students who were on the bus at the time.

The incident, Perdue said, was part of a game between the juvenile and other students who live in the area.

“Apparently, he and some other kids that live out there had been playing a game where they shoot each other with BB guns,” Perdue said. “He’d sent a message to a kid on the bus and said he’d shoot him when he got off the bus. Apparently, he didn’t wait until he got off the bus and shot into the bus.”

The juvenile, Perdue said, was not in school Monday.

For the time being, the case will be handled in juvenile court. Those proceedings and the records are closed to the public. Perdue didn’t rule out the possibility of charging the juvenile as an adult, but that would depend on several other factors, including the prosecutors.

The charge carries a penalty of one to five years in prison upon conviction.
