Red Cross Clark County Heroes Campaign begins March 15
March 13, 2010

The Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross is beginning its second annual Clark County Heroes Campaign with a kick-off luncheon at the Winchester/Clark County Chamber of commerce building on Monday.

The campaign is a community awareness and fundraising drive, chaired by Karen Haley, executive director of the Clark County Chamber of Commerce and features the support of several community leaders who are serving as fundraising captains.

“Our goal is to strengthen our local Red Cross Chapter, educate our constituents about the programs and services offered by the American Red Cross, and recognize community heroes,” stated Terry Burkhart, chief executive officer at the Bluegrass Chapter.

The campaign will run through April 30.

Individuals or organizations which raise a minimum of $1,000 are encouraged to nominate a local hero in Clark County. Local heroes are individuals who have positively impacted the community. Last year, Roberta Skinner, a local community activist, was the Clark County 2009 Red Cross “Hero of the Year.”

Individuals or organizations wishing to nominate a hero or wanting to find out how they can get involved in the campaign should call (859) 253-1331 or visit redcrosslexky.org.

The Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Last year, more than 250 volunteers donated some of their time in the Bluegrass. Many of these volunteers helped the victims of over 120 disasters; taught lifesaving skills to almost 10,000 residents; and assisted U.S. service members separated from their families.

The American Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time and money to do its work.
