| Ordinance taking aim at underage drinking | |
| Johnb Thursday, March 11, 2010: 9:30 pm Neutral | Teen drinking is very hard to avoid. Most of the parents who are "social hosts" are trying to avoid their teens from drinking and driving, or making sure they know what their teens are doing and where. If you ask me I think it is better to harbor a safe drinking atmosphere where a responsible adult can monitor behavior and alcohol consumption. Ask your self one question if your teen was drinking at a party would you rather have a responsible adult present or not? This new ordinance will not stop teen drinking, nor will it make our community safer. I do not think teen drinking is okay but I am not going to fool myself into thinking that my teen, if I had one is going to be alcohol free.

It is great that the Horse Park is planning to build their first one (although I question their estimated energy savings). Maybe they should consult with EKPC, since the coop is already a leader in this field.

| eddymeek Tuesday, March 9, 2010: 1:07 pm Neutral | I am a 10th Region basketball fan who happens to be born and raised in Mason County. Of course I enjoy when our team wins, but I enjoy a good game no matter who is playing or where it is played. GRC was without a doubt the better team this year but that is why they go ahead and play the games anyway. It is not any of these kids fault that the game is played where it is. All of the blame goes to our money hungry school systems that care nothing more than how much we can make on these games. I for one don't care how big your gym is I think that it should be played somewhere different every year with every team required to take they're turn hosting. This includes the likes of St.Patrick, Deming,Paris,Nicholas, etc. The kids that are playing would probably have more fun in a smaller venue. I think sometimes we forget that this is what high school sports are for, the kids. I am a supporter of the 10th Region when it comes to State Tournament, you can come visit the 4th floor of the Radisson all next week and see. We have the whole floor plus and all the teams jerseys hanging in our hospitality room. Three years ago when GRC was there, that was the jersey in the front. Like I said, let all the schools host it once every 16 years and then the kids wont have to listen to all of this and they can enjoy the moment because before you know it ,it's over and it's time for them to join the real world.

| Cardsupporter Tuesday, March 9, 2010: 12:00 pm Neutral | Eddy, sorry but I disagree. The 10th Region Boy's tourney has been played at Mason County 37 out of the last 40 years. I place some of the blame on the Clark County Schools administration. Fair is fair. No one deserves this kind of advantage. It is so unfortunate that we haven't pursued to be the host for the tourney. Some years we couldn't get enough votes, of course there hasn't been that many votes. Montgomery builds a gym, which still isn't as large as GRC'S, and somehow they get to host. Alot of it is just plain jealously because we are the largest school in the 10th region. We also have done a pitiful job of updating our facility to even have a chance to host. When the bleachers on the visitor's side started breaking down, we just tore them out and made a batting cage and storage, instead of fixing them. This has been the attitude around here for the last 40 plus years.. Fact is the tools are not in place for ANYONE to be successful, long term as the Coach at Clark County..

This has been going on for over 30 years now, and it's proven to be a windfall for Mason county. You can't just keep letting a good team have home court advantage year after year in order to get to the state tourney 7 out of 10 years.

| RMH Monday, March 8, 2010: 11:30 pm Neutral | I'm so glad the Sun published Mr. Edwards comments and generated this discussion. Many electric co-ops and for-profit utilities have realized that it costs less to save a kilowatt-hour of electricity than it does to produce one. Thus, rather than constantly investing in new generation capacity, many are now investing instead in efficiency and weatherization programs. Here's a fascinating article about a co-op in South Carolina that is moving forward with a plan to cut energy consumption 20% over the next 10 years through an aggressive program of energy efficiency and weatherization: http://www.postandcourier.com/news/2009/nov/01/in-state-electric-co-ops-plan-everyone-wins/ The plan would cost $800 million up front, but that would be paid off in about 8 years while at the same time reducing customers' energy bills. When one considers the avoided cost of a new power plant and a continuous fuel supply for that plant, the plan could save billions. Wouldn't it be nice if EKPC started looking around the country for models like this? Respond to this comment |

| truthtopower Saturday, March 6, 2010: 3:14 pm Neutral | Thanks to the Winchester Sun for publishing this important piece from Billy Edwards. I was in the room when he spoke at a recent air permit hearing about this proposed plant. I don't know Mr. Edwards, but I sure thought he was effective. I remember he talked about how long he has known and respected many of the people who are involved with the co-op. He explained that his opposition to this plant isn't personal, but based on the fact that going forward with this plant will cause harm to human health, the environment, rate-payers, and the co-op itself. In the end he didn't ask the KY Division of Air Quality to deny the permit in question. Instead, he looked right at the EKPC management in the audience and asked them to pull the plug on this project and pursue a cheaper and cleaner set of energy solutions. That took courage. I hope they remember that moment as well as I do, and that they were listening.

| EW Saturday, March 6, 2010: 1:07 pm Neutral | Despite bootlegger's observations, Mr. Edwards' "700 word article" remains unconvincing. It's easy to suggest others take the risk when you can walk away and blame them for their mistakes. He has done little more than suggest what is wrong with existing resources in KY without providing any substantial detail about what will work. As I said before: put your money where your mouth is (become a net-zero consumer) if you want to be taken seriously by industries that spend years in development before commiting these types of resources. I doubt you and Mr. Edwards' will be at the forefront of pointing out those areas where bleeding-edge technology failed to work effectively and left the people who invested and believed in it with unreliable and overpriced power. If I could believe you'd be objective enough to follow that course, I'd believe more in your cause. I think what most of this comes down to is NIMBY under the guise of environmental responsibility. Further, I never said I had "no problem" with tried and true technologies, but thanks for the distortion. I simply stated that they are the most cost-effective and reliable at the moment. Having said that, another truth that is being conveniently overlooked is that renewables such as wind and solar (the most likely resources compatible with our region) vary considerably throughout the day and seasons. This means when those resources are unavailable, other resources must be available or power will be unavailable for consumer demand. I presume Bootlegger and Mr. Edwards have a unique environmentally-friendly and cost-effective solution for that issue too huh? HINT: Peaking units and energy purchases from external sources cost more than in-state conventional generation resources. The technologies in development will remain in development until they exceed the capabilities of existing technology in cost, reliability, and longevity. Respond to this comment |

| Bootlegger Saturday, March 6, 2010: 11:51 am Neutral | The Winchester Sun shows some real courage with their willingness to report the concerns of their community and face the opprobrium of the Coal Industry. At least one media outlet takes its public mission seriously. Regarding EW's well-written comment, the gist of his argument seems to be that Mr. Edwards wasn't thorough enough in the 700 words alloted to him by the newspaper. I think Mr. Edwards is quite convincing in the short space alloted to him. EW also seems to have no problem with "tried and true technologies--dirty as they may be." But this is a contradiction. How can something so "dirty" that is incontrovertibly related to numerous health problem be considered "tried and true"? The only thing "tried" and "true" about coal burning is that we've tried it, and the truth is the pollution from mining and burning makes people sick increasing health care costs for everyone. The new technologies are still in development, but they will remain in development until we commit to them and make them our main energy sources. How else will they grow? Respond to this comment |

Simultaneously, the Sierra Club (http://action.sierraclub.org/site/MessageViewer?em_id=115741.0) boasts "For the past six years the Sierra Club and its allies have been running a hard-hitting campaign to expose the dirty truth about coal. Tremendous grassroots pressure, rising costs, and upcoming federal carbon regulations all contributed to the demise of the 100 plants." It would seem to be either a very convenient coincidence, or highly probable that Mr. Edwards is using statistics provided by the Sierra Club while omitting the fact that the Sierra Club had some direct intervention in stopping the construction of some of those 100 plants. That omission serves to mislead the reader by making it appear that utilities decided—without outside intervention or political pressure—to abandon those plants for the reasons he did bother to list. Perhaps equally interesting is Mr. Edwards’ proposal: “Investments in energy efficiency, weatherization, renewables and natural gas can save rate payers money while putting people back to work and providing energy.” Who specifically is Mr. Edwards suggesting should be the beneficiary of these energy efficiency and weatherization incentives? Would it be the same individuals who used the bulk of their home loans to obtain or construct the most elegant or sizeable residences they could, while using the minimum energy efficiency standards required? If so, that would seem a little self-serving would it not? Since Mr. Edwards seems to believe he has a detailed understanding of EKPC’s finances and the intimate workings of the power industry, it should present little difficulty for him to provide a detailed cost-benefit analysis for these “Investments in energy efficiency, weatherization, renewables and natural gas” concepts, and the specific technologies he proposes to accomplish this. There are after all, numerous “renewables” including solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, tidal, and hydro to name a few. If—as he seems to believe—he is correct, he would have electric utilities from across the nation beating a path to his door. Consistent with most speech writers with intent to get people “fired up” without letting facts get in the way, Mr. Edwards makes many claims, but provides little factual detail to substantiate his claims. Sure, some numbers are thrown in for good measure, or possibly to imply thorough statistical scrutiny, but nothing that actually backs up the core claim: that EKPC could provide the same amount of power (approximately 250 MW) using renewable generation and voluntary energy efficiency programs for the same or less money and equivalent reliability than the proposed coal plant. Make no mistake, renewable energy is maturing, but there remain (and will for some time) many technical and financial hurdles that must be overcome before those technologies achieve the same level of cost effectiveness and reliability that currently exists with tried-and-true technologies—dirty as they may be. The bottom line is that no one is stopping you from becoming a zero-net energy user by investing your own time, money, and resources at your residence to divest yourself of “the grid”. If you want to encourage energy efficiency and renewability, consider putting your money where your mouth is Mr. Edwards. Respond to this comment |

I know he can't possibly understand our situation living on this road. For the most part, the County has been pretty decent with us, it just get's frustrating. I'm hoping for a speedy repair. I hope the bridge is fixed soon before the spring showers come and the water is up all the time. As for tellthetruch, you hit the nail on the head. He or she, sounds like a very insensitive he, or BIGJOHN, whichever, doesnt matter, he is always trying to get something stirred up and get people going when they are already upset about something. The best thing to do is ignore him, because as RON WHITE says "you cant fix stupid!" I have yet to understand what makes people that way.........must just be plain rudeness.......definitely something i am not. Good luck, hope its ready within the week. Respond to this comment |

| rhondas Friday, March 5, 2010: 8:22 am Neutral | I agree DHughes. It's crazy. I live on Dry Fork Creek Rd. The bridge out has caused major problems for me. The school bus drives past the bridge to turn around and pick up my children for school. I've been told I must drive them to White Conkwright. I work from home and have no reason to leave my home during the day unless by choice. I now must make a trip to Trapp Ele at 7:00am and come back to pick up my Jr High and High school kids and take them to town. I work from home, during the day I must leave work drive to White Conkright at 3pm to pick up my Trapp student, then leave again at 4:25pm to pick up my other two. How inconvenient!!!! I will let you know they were out yesterday working on the bridge and are hoping to have it repaired next week is my understanding. However, talk about untimely inconvenience. I am providing a national training session for the company I work for next week for 400 employees. The sessions are from 9am - 5pm. I cannot pick up my kids next week. I am not sure what I am going to do!!!

Other people on Dry Fork can, with the exception of my family and the neighbors to our left. If I had an alternative, I wouln't complain about the road being closed!!!!

| dhughes Wednesday, March 3, 2010: 2:01 pm Neutral | How long before the bridge is replaced? I now must drive through the creek to go to work. This is unacceptable!! There has to be a different solution. I understand the bridge is dangerous and needs to be replaced..but, how would you feel if you had to drive through a creek to go to work, or town?? When the creeks rise with Spring rains ( look at next weeks forecast! ) how will I earn a living? God forbid if we need a Life Squad or Fire truck. As it is the Post Office refuses to deliver our mail because it only affects "TWO HOMES"..well, that's all fine and good except I work from 7 to 5 in a different county and the Post Office is open 9 to 4:45!! Glad it's election time!!

| sargeantbooger Thursday, February 25, 2010: 10:48 am Neutral | The child protective services in KY specifically Winchester and Powell county are a joke! We have a baby that has never been taken care of by the parents and there has been multiple reports filed against them; however 1 year later the child is still in that drug infested home. I can't believe they keep letting these children die! I would lose my mind if anything ever happened to the child I'm talking about, but that's exactly where this case is headed if the state doesn't get involved! Why wait and say if only they had stepped in sooner all these kids might have had a chance.... It's just frustrating and heartbreaking.

Eric Bledsoe could be so good, but it is easy to see when his switch flips and the "I've got to show the scouts what I can do" light goes on. Dribbling into double and triple team situations, continually forcing the action too much - - - and we are nearly 30 games into the season. Tha't's 15 hours of college level competition. He has GOT to improve if we have any chance to get as far as we can go.

| hello Wednesday, February 24, 2010: 11:28 am Neutral | This is so sad. I have two daughters and I could not imagine this. Why haven't there been arrests? I heard that the child had been in and out of hospital with bruising. Where were the social workers? Everyone needs to remember, children can not protect themselves and it's up to us to do that. It's sad that even some parents are the ones hurting children.

| Chateaudad42 Tuesday, February 23, 2010: 9:29 pm Neutral | I have my doubts that even after the county raises our property taxes (in a declining property market), the city nearly doubles the sewage rates, and both continue to find ways to fund themselves pay increases (don't get me started on the pension for life program), that the local government and school board will be able to provide my children with a decent lunch program, actual text books, or a place to learn free from drugs or daily fist fights in the school's foyer. But in the end, they will all have "equal access" to even less than they have now. It is the system that is broken, not the building and not the kids.
