Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Lewis has wanted to hold a triathlon in Winchester since he first got the job.

He got his wish Saturday morning as Parks and Recreation joined up with the Winchester YMCA and Crossfit Strode Station for the first-ever Win Sprint Triathlon at College Park Gym.

“There hasn’t been one in Winchester, and we finally got to put one together,” Lewis said. “We not only want to make it an annual event, we want to maybe increase the distances and have actual bikes on the road next year.”

For the first year, the swimming portion was held in the College Park Natatorium and the cycling was done on stationary bikes in the College Park Gym. If the event expands with a road portion for cycling, it will keep the stationary bikes for beginners, Lewis said.

The event is already beginner- and kid-friendly.

“It’s easy enough that the kids could do it with us. We did it as a family day,” Courtney Greenlee said. “This is a great beginner experience and if anyone is interested in trying it, this is the perfect place to come.”

Lewis said 30 participants were expected but 44 took part.

“I couldn’t be happier,” he said. “Everyone seemed really pleased.”

“We’re happy to bring something to Winchester that has never been done,” Lewis said.
