City approves tax rates

The Winchester Board of Commissioners approved the second and final reading of property tax rates in a special meeting Tuesday.

The rates were set at 14.6 cents per $100 value of real property and 14.99 cents for personal property, which were the same as last year. Both readings of the ordinance were approved unanimously.

The city could have taken a rate to generate a 4 percent increase in revenue, which would have been 15.4 cents.

Tax payments are due by Dec. 2. Following that date, a 10 percent penalty and 6 percent interest on the balance are imposed.

The commission also approved an amendment to the fiscal year 2017 paving program, adding $6,774.47 for additional milling work. The total contract is now $194,847.67 with The Allen Company.

In other action during the meeting, the commissioners:

— accepted the resignation of firefighter III/paramedic Nathan Thompson form Winchester Fire-EMS.

— accepted the resignation of patrolman Dwayne Green from the Winchester Police Department.
