The George Rogers Clark High School football team’s stretch of playing a trio of the state’s best thankfully comes to an end tonight, but the Cardinals still have the challenge of trying to find an answer for Lafayette.

The Generals visit Cardinal Stadium with kick-off set for 7:30 p.m.

“They’re everything you would think a polished, small college program looks like,” GRC coach Mike Riddle said. “They’re extremely well coached. They are dynamic on offense and can put a lot of points on the board.”

The Generals, who are 6-1 with the lone loss coming against state power Trinity, are led by quarterback Walker Wood, who was 19-of-29 for 245 yards and three touchdowns in a 65-55 win over Bryan Station last week.

“Walker Wood is a dual threat in a true sense,” Riddle said. “He can rush and scramble. He can drop back and throw it. They have an outstanding offense line and running back.”

While the Cardinals adjust their scheme to the personnel of the opponent each week, the Generals and Wood wil test their discipline on defense.

“Wood has matured and quarterbacks with that skillset, those that can run around, as they grow and mature they become more patient,” Riddle said. “That’s one thing you see about him on tape, he can tuck it and run, so in terms of schemes, you have to have your gaps covered and understand the blocking schemes.”

And the defensive scheme the Generals use will be something the Cardinals haven’t seen yet this season.

“They will bring inside pressure and press your outside receiver in man coverage, which is a big challenge because you have to be able to be physical on the perimeter and beat that pressure to find the open window.

“You better throw the ball away or complete your pass in three seconds or you’re going to take a sock for a loss.”

Riddle said Lafayette will bring pressure on first down and second down and depending on what the yardage is on third down, they may drop back and increase coverage.
