Things were quiet and scoreless for most of the first half in Fort Thomas Saturday, but after a goal with 13 minutes left in the first half, Highlands scored twice more to take a 3-0 lead a halftime.

The Bluebirds added three more in the second half, to win 6-0, dropping the George Rogers Clark High School boys soccer team to 8-8-4 after its final regular season game.

“Honestly, we didn’t come out prepared at all,” GRC coach Walter Ridener said. “In the last couple games, we’ve not been playing where we should be. I don’t know if we’re focused too much on our district tournament and trying to get this season over. They’re a quality team. But those last two goals (in the first half) came off a lack of effort from us.”

Highlands outshot GRC, but both teams pulled their starters not long into the second half. The Cardinals turn their attention to Montgomery County in the opening road of the 39th District Tournament at home Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

“We just have to forget about (Saturday),” Ridener said. “It’s gone. That’s what I just told them. What’s more important now is what’s going to happen Tuesday and Thursday of next week. We hope it’s a different team (Tuesday). We’ll practice Monday and see where we are from there.”
