Home health services are only one part of the overall health care picture.

November, though, is National Home Care Month, and was proclaimed as such recently by local officials.

“We provide skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, home health aides for individuals who need intensive care in the home,” said Shea Calvert, a patient care representative with Commonwealth Home Health in Winchester. “We also go out in the community and do events like blood pressure clinics and programs at senior citizens centers.”

The Winchester office serves Clark, Bourbon, Nicholas and Harrison counties, while offices in Richmond and Lexington cover the rest of a 16-county area, she said.

“Our goal is intentional care,” branch manager Kimberly Faulkner said. “Our final goal is for the patient to be independent in their home.”

“We just focus on therapy,” Calvert said.

The services provided are determined on a case-by-case basis, she said, and are often covered by a patient’s insurance.

Most patients receive home health services for 60 days, though some have as few as two weeks, she said. It’s all determined by the patient, doctors and needs.

The Winchester office has been through plenty of changes. Originally known as Nurses Registry, the company was recently sold and the name was changed to Commonwealth Home Health, Calvert said. The office will also be moving from Lexington Avenue to a new location in Winchester in the near future.

“We’re very patient-centered here,” Calvert said. “We’re not going to leave them hanging.”
