Miss Ivy Wardlow, a sophomore at Eastern Kentucky University, was selected first runner up in EKU’s homecoming competition Oct. 26. Daughter of Amy Shumate, Winchester, and John Wardlow, Lexington, Miss Wardlow is a graduate of George Rogers Clark High School.

Winchester native R. Hagan Rose has been named a “Spirit Master” at Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, for the 1991-92 school year. Rose, a junior government major, will be one of the 24 members of the university’s public relations committee that serve as hosts and hostesses at university functions. Rose is the son of Robert L. Rose and Nancy Clair Hagan Rose.

Tobacco buyers representing the major tobacco companies examined the 1991 burley crop Wednesday morning at the Winchester Tobacco Warehouse. The buyers, and members of other tobacco-related organizations, toured six tobacco warehouses Tuesday and five warehouses Wednesday during the annual VIP Tobacco tour. Leaf sales open Nov. 25.

Local carpenters and students in the carpentry class at the Clark County Vocational School began raising the walls of the Clark County Habitat for Humanity home on Fifth Street Wednesday. The students are helping with flooring and interior and exterior walls. The home contains approximately 1,200 square feet of living space.

Miss Valerie Kimball and Miss Henrietta Skinner, who are attending West Kentucky Vocational School, Paducah, attended the Baptist Convention held Oct. 21-23 in Hopkinsville. Miss Skinner, president of the campus Sunday School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Skinner, 10 Sixth St. Miss Kimball, pianist for the Campus Sunday School, is the daughter of Mrs. Clara Jones, 125 W. Broadway.

SAIGON — A U.S. First Infantry Division ambush patrol was attacked with Viet Cong gas grenades today, a division spokesman said. It was the first reported use of gas by the enemy in the Viet Nam War.

Joe Creason, staff writer and columnist for The Courier Journal, will speak Tuesday night at a dinner meeting of the Clark County Education Association. The meeting will be held at the Winchester Country Club and will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Miss Clara Ray Rupard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Jones of Clark County, and James Herbert Harris, son of Mrs. Shelby Harris of Winchester and the late Mr. Harris, were united in marriage Oct. 20 at the home of his mother on Lisle Lane.

County Judge Dorsey Curtis and Mrs. Jo Goodlett will soon decide which two Clark Countians will make free three-minute telephone calls to servicemen or women overseas. They were chosen to act as judges in the “Hi Mom” contest — a program sponsored by the Communications Workers of America, a union comprised of telephone industry employees and the United Services Organization.
