A Winchester man accused of causing a deadly apartment fire pleaded guilty Thursday.

Jackie Hisle Jr., 55, of 203 Springmist Lane, was indicted in April on three counts of second-degree manslaughter for the March 11 blaze at B&P Apartments. Investigators believe the fire started in Hisle’s first-floor apartment. Hisle told police he was smoking while he was on oxygen.

After reaching a plea agreement, Hisle is expected to serve five years for each count.

Hisle was arrested the day after the fire. During a hearing in district court, detectives testified that Hisle admitted to being intoxicated and said he knew it was dangerous to smoke while using oxygen.

Police believe the fire started near a sofa bed where Hisle said he was sitting. The fire then spread through Hisle’s apartment and into neighboring apartments on both floors. The fire damages the exterior stairs at the building, leading some residents to jump from second-floor windows to safety.

Hisle’s son Donald, Tina Reynolds and Dixie Everman all died from the fire. According to civil court documents, Everman died following her jump from a second floor window. She died at Clark Regional Medical Center, while Donald Hisle and Reynolds were pronounced dead at the scene.

Hisle is scheduled for sentencing Dec. 1.
