The Clark County Library is accepting submissions for its 2016 Read for a Wreath event.

According to library director Julie Maruskin, the event serves mainly as a fun way to promote local organizations and businesses.

“We came up with the idea last year because some businesses in town didn’t have promotion opportunities,” Maruskin said.

She said the library staff looked for a way to help promote local organizations through a contest, and the result had the added benefit of uniquely decorating the library.

“People were really creative and competitive with it,” she said.

The wreaths can be made from anything, but they must remain lighter than 5 pounds. They will go on display in the library from December 5-16, when the library hosts its open house.

The library’s teen advisory board will judge the contest and select the winners from the organizations that submitted wreaths. Winners will receive gift cards to local businesses as listed below.

— Best traditional style: $25 to Frank’s Doughnuts

— Best whimsical style: $25 to The Cairn Coffeehouse

— Best toy theme: $25 to The Daily Grind

— Best Kentucky theme: $25 to Gaunce’s

— Best edible theme: $25 to Grace Bakery

However, the largest prize will come from the people’s choice category, which is judged by library patrons who check out five or more books and receive a slip to fill out naming their favorite wreath.

During the open house on December 16, the winners of the contest will be announced. Wreath makers will receive their prizes, and a drawing will be held giving readers a chance to take home their favorite wreaths.

Maruskin said that any group can enter a wreath into the contest, and some individuals have done so as well in the past. Wreaths and entry forms are due back at the library by 5 p.m. December 3.
