Our View: Maximize donations with GoodGiving

Who doesn’t love a “buy one, get one” sale? There’s a certain thrill, maybe even a sense of pride, shoppers get when you know you’re getting two for the price of one.

Did you know you can get a similar thrill when you donate to local nonprofits through the GoodGiving Campaign?

The challenge begins at 9 a.m Tuesday and will run through Dec. 31. Through the challenge, sponsored by the Blue Grass Community Foundation and Smiley Pete Publishing, the Clark County Community Foundation will match donations dollar-for-dollar to local nonprofits up to $10,000.

That means for every dollar you donate, another dollar is given to support local charities.

In its sixth year, the campaign has more than 120 charities participating, including 13 Clark County nonprofits.

From Clark County, you can support a variety of causes, from education and the arts to organizations that help families meet their basic needs, rescue animals and preserve local history. Whatever your passion or interest, there’s a local charity you can support through the challenge.

The annual online fundraiser began as a means of allowing area nonprofits to tap into the momentum in online giving. The Challenge has raised more than $5.5 million for Bluegrass-area charities to date, via large and small donations.

The campaign allows organizations to raise much more than they would receive from a typical grant cycle with the added benefit of using the funds however they see necessary.

When you’re making an investment in your community, it’s nice to know there are others standing by willing to match that investment. These nonprofits survive almost exclusively on donations and grants, which are often difficult to apply for and highly competitive. With these donations, local charities strive to make our community a better place to live — whether that’s by preserving our heritage, saving our furry friends, improving our schools or ensuring families have warm homes and food on the table.

Many choose to use the holiday season as a time to give to charities, we encourage you to maximize your impact this year.
