Applications for KDA internships for 2017 now available 

FRANKFORT — College students pursuing a career in agriculture or government are invited to apply for a position in the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s (KDA’s) internship program for the summer of 2017, Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles has announced.

“The KDA’s internship program provides students a hands-on work experience that will enable them to gain the insight needed to consider a future career in the agriculture industry,” Quarles said. “Our program has attracted bright, talented, energetic young people who have gone on to successful careers. We look forward to reviewing applications for 2017 and welcoming the next class of interns.”

In addition to agriculture, KDA interns may work in education, computer science, marketing, public relations, human resources, pre-law, and other fields. Internships will run from June through August.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a college or university, or vocational-technical program. Preference will be given to students who are residents of Kentucky.

To apply, students must download the application on the KDA’s website at kyagr.com/marketing/education-resources.html and fill it out. Applicants must provide a résumé, cover letter, and three references. Applications must be received at the KDA no later than Jan. 6 at 4:30 p.m. EST.

EKU students inducted into Phi Kappa Phi

RICHMOND – Fifty-two Eastern Kentucky University students were recently recognized for outstanding academic achievement and inducted into the University’s chapter of Phi Kappa Phi.

The inductees included seniors and graduate students at the top 10 percent of their class and juniors at the top 7.5 percent. The EKU Phi Kappa Phi Fall 2016 inductees included Ronald D. McCarty of Winchester.

Several EKU sophomores also received academic achievement certificates for completing more than 30 hours with a grade point average of 3.7 and above.

EKU faculty were also honored through recognitions and inductions into the University’s Phi Kappa Phi chapter. Inductees and honorees included the event’s keynote speaker, Dr. Erik Liddell, EKU Honors faculty fellow and associate professor of languages, cultures and humanities, and David Afsah-Mohallatee, EKU Foundation professor and professor of art and design.

Founded in 1897, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

EKU students win Kentucky Academy of Science awards 

RICHMOND — Eight Eastern Kentucky University students earned awards at the Kentucky Academy of Science 2016 Annual Meeting, held Nov. 4-5 at the University of Louisville.

Reika Haskell, Glen Burnie, Maryland, placed second in the Graduate Research Competition category.

Winners in the Undergraduate Research Oral Presentation category were: Lee Minzenberger, first place, Winchester, Kentucky; Ethan Sweet, second place, Corbin, Kentucky; Faithe Goff, second place, Beaver Dam, Kentucky; and Laura Kelley, third place, Bagdad, Kentucky.

Winners in the Undergraduate Research Poster category were: Nicholas Vossenberg, first place, Fredericksburg, Virginia; Kylie Heupel, third place, Dry Ridge, Kentucky; and Haylie Sizemore, third place, London, Kentucky.
