A Winchester man charged with stealing a pickup truck and leading police on a pursuit pleaded guilty to one charge and sent the rest to the grand jury.

William Benningfield, 28, of 250 Mutual Ave., will serve 90 days of a 360-day sentence for facilitation to theft of a motor vehicle after pleading guilty Wednesday in Clark District Court. The remaining eight charges, including fleeing or evading police and driving under the influence, were waived to the grand jury.

The remaining 270 days were conditionally discharged for two years.

Benningfield was arrested last week, about a month after the Nov. 5 incident when Winchester Police stopped a Chevrolet Colorado for a suspected intoxicated driver around 3 a.m. Officers stopped the truck, but Benningfield, who was driving, sped off while police confirmed ownership of the truck. Officers followed but lost sight of the truck until finding the wreckage at the intersection of Colby Road and Harkins Drive.

Benningfield had lost control of the truck, hit a concrete structure around a fire hydrant and then hit a utility pole. Police said the truck’s cab and bed were separated in the crash, and Benningfield was ejected. He was transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center with injuries, and police waited to file charges until he was released from the hospital.

The truck was reported stolen about an hour after the pursuit and crash.
