Winchester’s own Ale-8-One is proof safety and success in business do not have to be mutually exclusive to one another.

We applaud the local company for its initiatives and commitment to a safe work environment, efforts that allowed the soft drink manufacturer to receive the Destiny Award from Kentucky Employers’ Mutual Insurance for the sixth year in a row.

Those not in tune with the insurance industry might not realize how big a deal this actually is for an employer.

With more than 24,000 insured by KEMI, the fact Ale-8-One was selected as one of 14 to be honored is impressive in and of itself. The fact the company is one of only three to ever receive this honor five or more years in a row shows a firm commitment to safety and the willingness to go above and beyond when it comes to employee safety.

KEMI officials say it is no small feat to be honored. With very stringent criteria, awards are given to policyholders that best exemplify the insurer’s motto of “control your own destiny.” Award recipients have reduced workers’ compensation costs through the implementation of formal safety programs, the completion of on-site training and hosting regular safety meetings.

After more than 90 years in business, Ale-8 could simply rely on its image, be satisfied with the status quo and go through the motions. Thankfully, that goes against the principles the company was built on and the vision that has helped keep it strong.

Many other insurance companies offer similar recognitions and we urge employers to look at Ale-8 as setting the bar. All employers can strive to do more.

At the end of the day, the objective isn’t about getting awards, but that is a nice perk that comes on top of keeping Kentucky workers safe.
