There are still a few slots for volunteers who want to help with Operation Happiness and Wednesday’s Day of Giving.

Clark County Community Services Executive Director Debbie Fatkin said registration ends at midnight for volunteers for those wanting to work tonight, Wednesday during the Day of Giving at Emmanuel Episcopal Church or Thursday at CCCS at 30 Taylor Ave.

“Tonight we’ll be sorting food (collected) at local schools or in the barrels around town,” she said. “On Wednesday we have openings all day from 7:30 all the way to 5 p.m.”

Slots and times are available at www.operationhappiness.net. Tonight’s volunteers are needed from 5-7 p.m. or 7-9 p.m., she said; shifts vary throughout Wednesday.

CCCS is prepared to distribute winter coats and holiday meals to more than 1,110 families Wednesday during the annual Day of Giving. About 1,280 food boxes, which will include some staples for the home, will be given out during the course of the day, she said.

Fatkin said things look good for this year’s event, which will take about $40,000 and 600 volunteers to pull off.

Families will start being taken through the church at 10 a.m. Wednesday, she said. Those who don’t want to wait in line, she said, should come after 1 p.m. when things tend to slow down.

“The food boxes aren’t any different at 10 a.m. than they are at 5 p.m.,” she said.

Whatever is left, in case registered families can’t attend Wednesday, will be distributed Thursday morning on a first-come, first-serve basis at Community Services, located at 30 Taylor Ave. There are no guarantees on what may be left, she said.

Volunteers on Wednesday are asked to park at Winchester Plaza, where shuttles from Central Baptist Church will carry them to Emmanuel Episcopal. Registered families can still park at Emmanuel Episcopal, she said.
