Travelers flood the roads at higher volumes visiting loved ones for the holidays and that includes a higher number of impaired drivers.

According to MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), New Year’s Day is the most dangerous day of the year for drunk driving on our nation’s roadways. This is primarily because of the “party the new year in” mentality of the holiday.

The holidays are a time for celebration, and libations are often included, so make sure to take the necessary steps to ensure your friends and loved ones don’t start the new year with a dangerous wreck.

Designate a sober driver who will be responsible for getting you and other party-goers home safely.

If you are going out with a large group, consider hiring a shuttle or limousine service. This can make the party that much more fun while also ensuring everyone is safe.

If you plan to visit a busy night scene, consider booking a hotel room for you and your friends within walking distance or a short cab ride from the party destinations.

There are also several driving services, like Lyft and Uber. Download the applications on your phone in advance, load your credit card information and plan to call for a ride when the night is winding down.

If you don’t plan to party on New Year’s Eve, consider hosting a get-together at your home for friends and family. To make things extra-safe, plan to make it an overnight stay — especially for teenagers — to keep people off the roads when drunk drivers might be out in full-force.

If you do host a party with alcohol, ask guests to drop their keys in a bowl that will be put up and guarded by a designated sober guest. Also have phone numbers of taxi services available for guests who need a safe ride home.
