Campton man killed in Sunday I-64 crash

A Wolfe County man was killed when he lost control of his car late Sunday night on Interstate 64 in Clark County.

Winchester Police said 27-year-old Derek W. Clifford of Campton, lost control of his Pontiac G6 sedan around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Winchester Police Capt. Harvey Craycraft said Clifford took the westbound offramp at exit 96 and lost control of his car. The car slid, went off the edge of the ramp, hit an embankment and overturned.

Clark County Coroner Robert Gayheart said Clifford was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle. Clifford was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Gayheart said Clifford was going to his job in the Winchester Industrial Park when the crash occurred.

Craycraft said the crash may have been caused by a combination of speed and wet road conditions.

Clifford was alone in the car and no other vehicles were involved.
