The Winchester Sun won several top awards Thursday at the Kentucky Press Association’s Excellence in Newspapers contest.

The awards for 2016 were presented during a banquet at the press association’s annual convention, which was hosted in Louisville. The organization is the nation’s 10th oldest state press association, and represents nearly 175 newspapers throughout the state.

Sun staff members were awarded five first-place, three second-place and two third-place awards. Each of the newsroom staff employed during the contest period won at least one award.

The Sun also earned third-place general excellence in the daily class 1 division. The ranking is determined by scoring points for the number of first-, second- and third-place awards earned by each newspaper in the division. The Corbin Times-Tribune took first and the Kentucky New Era of Hopkinsville won second.

Fred Petke won first place in the best breaking news coverage category for his coverage of a fatal fire at the B&P Apartments in March.

Former staff writer and photographer Steve Foley won first and third place in the best business feature category. He also won first place in the best feature photo category for a photo he snapped of a rainbow framing the Farm To Table dinner on Depot Street.

Sports editor Casey Castle won third place in the best sports photo essay category.

Editor Whitney Leggett won first place in the best general news photo category for a photo of Clark County’s Distinguished Young Woman Lacee Duncan winning the local contest in June. She also won second place in both the best feature story and best photo essay categories.

The staff won second place in the best lifestyle page category for the T.G.I.F. pages.

Other papers owned by Boone Newspapers — the Advocate-Messenger of Danville, Stanford’s Interior Journal, Jessamine Journal and The State Journal in Frankfort — also won several top honors in the contest.

The State Journal won third place general excellence in the daily class 2 division, and the Jessamine Journal won second place general excellence in the weekly class 2 division.
