Murder suspect Lonnie Martin is back on the trial docket for the 2013 death of a Winchester woman.

Martin, 43, of Stanton, is charged with murder and tampering with physical evidence in the homicide of Kyla Kline in July 2013.

Court officials in Montgomery County said Martin’s trial is scheduled for July 17 and is expected to last several days. The trial itself will take place in Rowan County, which is part of the same judicial circuit, following Martin being charged with assaulting a deputy jailer in May 2016. That case is also scheduled for a trial the same day.

A pre-trial conference was scheduled for March 24.

The new trial date is the latest of many in a case which has been active for three and a half years. The case has been delayed many times while waiting for evidence to be tested and analyzed, but also because the Montgomery County prosecutor resigned and Martin’s own attorney retired.

Martin was originally arrested in late July 2013 after the body of Kyla Kline was found on a farm near the Montgomery-Clark county line.

Kline lived in Winchester, but disappeared July 3, 2013. Her family reported her missing three days later. Her remains, though, were not found until July 28, 2013, when a K-9 search dog found them beneath a brush pile on a farm.

Kline was stabbed several times, Montgomery County detectives said at the time.

Following his arrest, Winchester Police detectives interviewed Martin. Based on Martin’s statements during that interview, detectives charged him with the 1995 death of his cousin Joseph B. Martin.

Prosecutors in Clark County are waiting for Martin’s Montgomery County case to be resolved before moving ahead with his case here. Last week, an Aug. 3 status conference was set in Clark Circuit Court.

Joseph B. Martin died after falling from the Washington Street overpass on Oct. 29, 1995, police said, before being hit by a train on the tracks below. Police believed there was foul play at the time, but did not have enough evidence to charge anyone.
