Lucille Ray Gilkey, 91

Lucille Ray Gilkey passed away Sunday, January 22, 2017, in Louisville, Kentucky, after a long illness.

She was a longtime resident of Winchester for 55 years. Lucille’s passion was teaching music for 35 years. After graduating from the University of Kentucky, she started the first band in Clark County and taught at several elementary schools and Belmont Junior High School. Her students fondly remembered her enthusiasm for teaching, love for her students, and dedication to providing families and friends with her musical programs throughout her career.

In addition to her professional career, she was also an avid member of her community and an active member of the First United Methodist Church. Lucille touched many hearts throughout her path in life. She had a unique sense of humor accompanied with a contagious smile for all who shared her love for music.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee Porter and Marian Todd Ray; her sister, Virginia Ray Walker; a nephew, Frederick Walker, Jr. and her husband James Gilkey, Jr. She is survived by her 2 daughters, Carol Gilkey Land (John) and Marian Lee Gilkey; one grandchild, April Land Dunham (Jeremy); 2 great grandchildren, Chase and Ashley Dunham; 2 nephews, Steven Ray (Rebecca) Walker, Jeffery Todd (Betsy) Walker; 1 great niece, Kaitlyn Virginia Walker; and a cousin, Rosanne Tracy Chambers.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. January 26 at Scobee Funeral Home followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Winchester Cemetery.
