A baby was killed early Sunday morning in a violent crash along Interstate 64 in Clark County.

The crash is still under investigation, but Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue Jr. said it appears the baby’s car seat was not installed properly.

According to the accident report, Alexandra Aponte, 19 of Vine Grove, was driving west near the 103 mile marker around 3 a.m. Sunday. She told deputies another vehicle forced her into the median, where she lost control of the Dodge Caliber. The car crossed the westbound lanes, struck a rock embankment and came to rest in the middle of the lanes.

When deputies and witnesses reached the scene, Aponte was holding the baby, Leilani Adams, in the highway. Aponte, the child’s mother, and Adams were transported to Clark Regional Medical Center, before Adams was flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center. She died about two hours after the crash, and was a couple days short of being seven months old.

Her father, 22-year-old Lavonte Q. Adams of Elizabethtown, was also in the car but was not injured, according to the report.

“It was a very violent wreck,” Perdue said. “(A) very tragic accident.”

Perdue said there was no evidence of another vehicle being involved and there were no witnesses, which was not unusual given the time and location of the crash.
