Winter Walk About coming downtown Thursday

More than a dozen downtown businesses and three others from other parts of town have banded together for a mid-winter sales event.

The Winter Walk About will be from 5-9 p.m. Thursday throughout downtown Winchester. Many businesses will have special sales and other events throughout the night.

Engine House Deli+Pub owner Steve Atkins said the event came together after learning the Wine about Winter  wine-tasting event would not return this year. Participating businesses didn’t want to see it go.

“It raises our revenue,” he said. “Mine was up $1,000 that night. In the winter, that’s pretty impressive.”

Main Street Winchester Executive Director Rachel Alexander said the board decided not to continue the event this year for a number of reasons, including unpredictable weather, small crowds and its similarity to the Sip and Stroll event later in the year.

“It was a tough decision to not have Wine About Winter this year, because we know it is a favorite, but when we did our post-event analysis and looked at our goals for the year, it just didn’t fit anymore,” Alexander said in an email. “But we are incredibly proud of the work the downtown businesses have done to organize Winter Walk About. They’ve done a super job putting it together and it’s going to be a great evening to be downtown.”

The Winter Walk About will not be a wine-tasting event exclusively, though there will be gifts and other sales among the participating businesses, he said. The Engine House, he said, will have a special menu item that night as well.

Patrons can register to win a gift basket with presents and gift certificates from many downtown businesses, he said.

Sponsoring businesses include Artisan Gifts and Gallery, Bentley and Murray, Big Blue Woodworks, Cartwright Signs, Court Street Gifts, Created by You, Dirty South Pottery, Eklektic Alchemy, Engine House Deli, Hometown Antiques, Jako’s Boutique, Mason on Main, Plowshares, Rosebud’s Boutique, The Barre, The Cairn, The Prissy Peach, Sugar Belle’s and Vivi’s and guest vendors Grace Cafe and Bakery, The Banery and Creative Coffees Roastery.
