Julie Hale, a fifth-grade social studies teacher at Baker Intermediate, is instilling valuable lessons in her students through the words of others.

The teacher is using quotes from famous people to get her students to think about their own actions and the actions of their classmates.

Hale got the idea for a weekly exercise called “keep the quote” from another teacher she follows on Instagram.

This is how it works.

Each week she writes a new quote on a piece of paper and displays it in the classroom. The students read the quote each week, discuss its meaning and are challenged to live up to the message.

At the beginning of the next week, the students nominate and vote for who among them best embodies the spirit of the quote during the week. Hale then chooses a winner and the winner gets to take the quote home.

We love this concept and applaud Hale for the creative approach to teaching her students about others and themselves.
