Our View: ‘Unsung Heroes’ offer window into community

The wait is over.

If you have read the Progress 2017 supplement inside today’s newspaper, you have now seen who The Winchester Sun recognized as Clark County’s Unsung Heroes.

The important thing to remember is that these really aren’t our heroes. They are yours!

More than 30 people were recognized, each one nominated by their peers, friends or neighbors as individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty to be a positive influence in someone’s life and make a difference in the community.

Is this all of our community’s heroes? Not even close!

So many people are working hard — out front in public and behind the scenes — to make this community a great place to live, work and play.

We were blown away by the response from readers and by the caliber of the nominees. It was truly our privilege to get to know them just a little bit and share a small snapshot about what makes these men and women special.

Almost every single one said they didn’t feel like they were special or didn’t deserve the recognition.

And that is exactly why they did!

We cannot wait until next year as we hope to recognize even more individuals.

If you see one of this year’s Unsung Heroes — or even someone you feel should have been named as such — tell them “thank you” for all they do. Even better, ask what you can do to help.

Working together and following positive examples set by these individuals, we can truly make Winchester and Clark County an even better place to call home.
