The Clark County Community Education Advisory Council had its bi-monthly meeting March 15 at Central Bank. Community Education Director Cora Heffner introduced guest Jason Dailey, new director of the Adult Education Center. He explained their services and they are seeking to get the word out for those who want to earn a GED and to get sponsors to help individuals pay the $120 test fee.

Community Education recently moved to 100 Vaught Road. They also have a new email: community.ed@clark.kyschools.us .

There will be a Job Fair at BCTC May 12. Community Education will bus GRC seniors from 9-10 a.m. It is also open to high school seniors from surrounding counties and military veterans from 9-11 a.m. The public is invited from noon to 2 p.m. Employer registration is available on Community Education’s website: http://teach.clarkschools.net/Depts/CommEd/.

School-To-Careers Job Shadowing for juniors and seniors will be April 11-13 and April 18.

Community Education set up monthly budgeting classes at Beacon of Hope, at their request. Staff from Winchester Federal Bank are providing instruction. There have been two classes to date with about 30 participants in each.

There will be a Family ArtFest April 6-8 in conjunction with 4-H and the Clark County Homeless Coalition,  Auntie’s Academy is a sponsor providing free daycare and lunch for those 5 and younger. Spring classes are doing well to date, with only two canceled because of low enrollment: Yoga fitness and Spanish.

A second free Self-Defense for Women has been added for 6 to 8 p.m. April 3. Call 745-3946 to register.

Mike Kindred, Area Technology Center principal, reported that the first graduate of the 1 + 1 Program has obtained an internship at Infiltrator.

Amazon donated 300 computers. The ATC has received a grant to hold a week-long summer camp the first week after school ends. This is an opportunity for eighth graders to explore the various content areas.

The carpentry department will be working with Habitat for Humanity on nine houses they will be building in Winchester.

Greg Yates, director of Partners In Education, noted that PIE has a new sponsor: People’s Exchange Bank. Amazon is working with PIE to begin a leadership mentor program for high school females.

Deborah Jackson with Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation announced there were 926 registrants for this year’s Wellness Challenge, almost twice as many from last year. The celebration for culmination of the challenge will be at Clark Regional Medical Center May 13. Parks and Recreation’s annual Run for the Paws benefiting the Clark County Animal Shelter will be May 21 at Bluegrass Community and Technology College. An underwater Easter egg hunt will be held the week before Easter. A nine-week summer camp will begin in June.

Todd Denham with the Economic Development Authority announced they are working with Univance to add a new building on another plot in the Industrial Park.

In addition to Heffner, Dailey, Kindred, Yates, Manley, Jackson, and Denham, also in attendance were Jason Luring with Catalent, Cindy Banks with the Chamber of Commerce, Jutta Kausch with NAMI, guest Kimberly Rhodus with Parks and Recreation, and Janice Innocenzi with Community Education.

The next meeting will be at noon May 17 at Central Bank. All meetings are open to the public.
