George Rogers Clark High School boasts some phenomenal alumni, and Alexis Thompson was certainly one of them.

Her passion for the health care field and teaching younger generations about it was admirable, and we commend the community and certainly her parents for continuing that legacy.

Alexis Thompson was 19 when she died in a car accident in 2016. But her parents are determined to keep their only daughter’s memory alive.

On June 2, Alexis’ friends, family and other supporters will come together at George Rogers Clark High School to part in a 5K called Soles for Jesus to raise money for what Alexis cared about most — the children of Clark County.

The money raised by the 5K will be used to help the family resource centers at local elementary schools provide children with their needs, whether it be food, clothing or backpacks.

We can’t begin to imagine how difficult it must be to lose your only child, but Vicki and Whitney Thompson’s ability to take tragedy and develop a will to give back is truly inspiring.

Not only is this 5K race a beautiful tribute to the Thompson’s daughter, it is yet another example of Winchester and Clark County’s philanthropic spirit.

For the congregation at First Church of God and other members of the community to come alongside this family and help, is a testament to the goodness and graciousness of the community.

We encourage others to rally behind this cause, which will bring comfort to a grieving family but also support needy children in our local schools.
