GRC track places 1st, 2nd in Mayor’s Cup

The George Rogers Clark High School track teams started the 2017 season off strong thanks to first-place and second-place finishes in the Mayor’s Cup in Mount Sterling Saturday.

The girls team won the meet and the boys brought home second place. The girls had 127 total points to easily top second-place Bath County’s 102 total. Host Mongtomery County finished with 73 points to take third out of five total competing teams.

It was the second straight win for the girls in the Mayor’s Cup. They also won the meet in 2011.

The boys were just 17 points back of first-place Montgomery’s 110 points. GRC finished with 93 to edge out Bath County’s 92.

It was a step up from last year’s third-place finish for

the boys, who had dominated the Mayor’s Cup with wins from 2011 to 2015.

GRC coach Dodd Dixon said the boys team is in the midst of rebuilding and hope to return the Mayor’s Cup to Winchester next season.

Mackenzie Cooper won the 100m hurdles with a time of 18.20, edging out teammate Skylar Carmichael in the event.

Dasia Glanton won the 100m dash with a time of 13

.91. Teammate Erika Barker finished third in the event. Sarah Vickers, Liz Hale and Amari Turley finished fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

The team of Turley, Hale, Glanton and Sydney Miller won the 4x200m relay. Miller, Hale, Glanton and Haley Goldhahn won the 4x100m relay.

Barker finished second in the 400m dash. Cooper won the 300m hurdles and Carmichael took third place.

Emma Taylor finished third in the 800m run.

Glanton won the 200m dash, with a time of 29.43. Vickers finished third in the event. Her time was 30.21.

Taylor took third place in the 3200m run.

Carmicheal won the pole vault event, Goldhahn finished third in the high jump and Cooper won the long jump. In the triple jump event,  Vickers finished third and Goldhahn took fourth place.

Kierah Roberston finished third in the discuss throw and shot put.

On the boys side, Jonathon Reitral finished third in the 110m hurdles and second in the 300m hurdles.

Joseph Happy won the 100m dash with a time of 11.80. Tre’Von Jones finished third in the event, with a time of 11.99.

The team of Jones, Happy, Nitavius Thomas and Caleb Wilson won the 4x200m relay.

Jones, Thomas, Happy and AJ Connor won the 4x100m relay.

Cody Cooper finished third in the 800m run.

Happy’s time of 23.34 edged out teammate Jones’s time of 24.38 to win the 200m dash. Caleb Wilson won the triple jump.

Isaiah Carpenter took second and Blake Jernigan third in the shot put.

The GRC track teams travel to Cynthiana Thursday take part in a meet at Harrison County High School.

Then the team will begin preparing for its “home” meet — the GRC Heavy Metal Throwdown, which the team hosts at Translyvania University in Lexington on April 8.
