A Winchester man pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer following a December pursuit.

Lee F. Johnson, 32, of 132 Boone Ave., changed his plea Thursday in Clark Circuit Court concerning the Dec. 6, 2016, incident.

According to court records, Johnson pleaded guilty to third-degree assault, driving under the influence, first-degree wanton endangerment and first-degree fleeing or evading police. Prosecutors recommended a total sentence of two years and a day, plus fines and a license suspension for driving under the influence. A persistent felony offender charge and one for disregarding a stop sign were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

The incident began as a reckless driver complaint. Winchester Police officers arrested Johnson following a traffic stop on Bypass Road and took him to the Clark County Detention Center.

Once at the jail, police said Johnson became disruptive and head-butted Officer Monte Corbett.

Initially, Johnson was also charged with bribery of a public servant for allegedly offering Corbett $50 to settle the case. The grand jury, though, did not indict Johnson for the charge.

Johnson is scheduled to be sentenced May 11 by Clark Circuit Judge William Clouse.
