PIE program puts ‘experts’ in classrooms

A new program by Partners in Education is putting students in touch with local professionals.

PIE administrative assistant Carolyne Richtarsic, coordinator for Experts in Education, said the goal of the program is to assist teachers with an identified deficiency.

“Teachers are always looking for unique ways to teach their students, and most students really benefit from hearing about real-world experiences in addition to classroom learning,” Richtarsic said. “The problem is most teachers do not have the time to go out and find outside speakers.”

PIE is attempting to fill the gap by gathering volunteers to speak to classes at Campbell Jr. High School.

So far, experts have talked about work fields including medical, forensics, engineering, banking, math, science and traveling.

“We are looking for any subject, from a career to a hobby,” Richtarsic said. “The idea is no matter what the subject matter, we can track down a speaker for the teacher, even if it is an after-school just-for-fun program.”

Speakers usually talk to one or two classes, with each class period lasting 45 to 60 minutes, she said.

“Some people have put together PowerPoint presentations or have brought actual hands-on experiments or demonstrations, but this is by no means required,” Richtarsic said. “They just need to be prepared to speak to the students for the allotted time.”
