Library adult summer reading program begins June 1
The Clark County Public Library’s Adult Summer Reading Program begins Thursday, June 1. Everyone who registers for the program will receive a free cotton canvas library tote bag. There will be prize baskets full of books, snacks and other goodies raffled every week. Throughout June and July, there will be free yoga on the library lawn courtesy of the OM place (mats provided) from 9 to a.m. every Saturday. There will also be free concerts on the library lawn, with The Tripp Bratton Drum Ensemble at 7 p.m. June 2 and Bruce Lewis Gypsy Jazz at 7 p.m. June 16. Bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating. There will be free iced tea and snacks.
City commission meeting rescheduled
The Winchester Board of Commissioners meeting scheduled for May 16 has been canceled. The commission will meet at 8:30 a.m. May 22 and 8:30 a.m. May 25 for budget work sessions in the City Commission chambers at City Hall.
AARP Smart Drivers course is May 22
The AARP Smart Drivers course will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, May 22, at the Clark County Extension Office. Cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Call 744-4682 to register or for more details.
Alley bicycle ride is May 20
Bike the lovely, leafy alleys of Winchester from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 20. The ride will start at the Clark County Public Library and finish at South Main Grocery for lunch. Register to attend by calling 744-5661 or at clarkbooks.org.
Bill Best presentation at library May 17
Bill Best, founder of the Sustainable Mountain Agriculture Center, will present a program about 3,000 years of Kentucky seed saving at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, at the Clark County Public Library. The program is free and open to the public. Best will have historic heirloom Kentucky bean seeds to sell along with copies of his book, “Kentucky Heirloom Seeds: Growing, Eating, Saving.” Register to attend by calling 744-5661 or at clarkbooks.org.
Bluegrass Heritage Museum trolley tours scheduled
The Bluegrass Heritage Museum Trolley Tours for 2017 will begin today.
The following tours have been scheduled:
— May 16: Visit the Hubbard Taylor Cemetery and Spring Hill.
— May 23: Visit the late 1790s historic home of Joan Mayer and enjoy a tour and a box supper.
— May 30: Visit First Baptist Church on Highland Street and Broadway Christian Church to learn about history and preservation efforts.
Reservations are required by calling the Bluegrass Heritage Museum at
745-1358 between noon and 4 p.m. The May 9, May 16 and May 30 tours are $10. The May 23 tour is $20, which includes a boxed dinner. The May 23 tour is full with a waiting list. The bus will leave the museum at 5:30 p.m. Please arrive early to pay for your tour and board the bus.
Applications accepted for CAIP
Applications are now available for Clark County County Agriculture Investment Program sign-ups through May 30. Applications for money for farm improvements can be picked up from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Clark County Conservation District Office, 667 Tech Drive. 4-H Council to meet
The Clark County 4-H Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, at the Extension Office.
School board meeting May 16
The Clark County Board of Education will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. May 16, at Central Office, 1600 W. Lexington Ave. The meeting is open to the public.
African-American Health Series discussion is May 19
There will be a discussion as part of the African-American Health Series called “Let’s Get Active,” from 10 a.m. to noon at The Generation Center, 32 Meadow Lane. Beth Jones will be the guest speaker from 11:30 a.m. to noon on behalf of Parks and Recreation. For more information, call Cara O’Neill at 744-4482.
Clark 4-H Council meeting May 16
The Clark County 4-H Council will meet at 6:30 p.m.Tuesday, May 16 at the Extension Office, 1400 Fortune Drive.
Flag retirement ceremony May 27
The Central Kentucky Coon Hunters Association will have its annual flag retirement and veteran appreciation ceremony at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 27, at the club’s property at 3601 Pine Ridge Road. A meal will be at 6 p.m. followed by the flag retirement ceremony at 7 p.m. For more information, call 771-0866. It is open to the public.
Kiwanis speakers scheduled
Kiwanis chairperson Dave Mullen will serve as host for Lisa Whitaker, executive director of New Beginnings, during a lunch at noon Wednesday, May 17, at Taste of China on Bypass Road. Coos Ockers will serve as host for Tyler Montgomery, editor in chief and publisher of Brewer Magazine, as he speaks about his pending plans in downtown Winchester, at noon Wednesday, May 31, also at Taste of China. The club meets at noon every Wednesday.
Human Services Council to meet
The next Clark County Human Services Council meeting will be at noon Tuesday, May 16, at Arby’s. All human services agencies serving Clark County are invited to send a representative.
Hospital to celebrate 100th anniversary
Clark Regional Medical Center will host a community health fair as part of the week-long celebration, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Clark County Fish and Game Club’s annual youth fishing day will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 13, at the clubhouse on Water Works Road. The event is free and open to all youth 15 and younger. Bluegill tourney May 20
The Clark County Fish and Game Club will hold an open bluegill tournament from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 20. The event, which is open to anyone 16 years of age and older, will be at the Carroll Ecton Reservoir, 1255 Water Works Road. For more information, call Lee Kerr at 771-5639.
