Members of Winchester-Clark County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 34 will travel to Washington, D.C. next week to participate in Peace Officers Memorial Day.

The official observance will be Monday, May 15.

“We make a solemn pledge to our brothers and sisters that we will always remember their sacrifice,” Kentucky FOP President and Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue Jr. said in a statement. “While we carry out that promise every day we serve, Peace Officer Memorial Day is our opportunity to share the story of sacrifice with the public.”

In 2016, 135 officers were killed in the line of duty in the United States.

“We remember those who’ve died protecting others,” Perdue said. “We also hope that this can serve as recognition and a turning point so those who strive to keep our communities safe are kept safe themselves.”

The day is part of Police Week in Washington, D.C. Peace Officer Memorial Day was established in 1962 with a joint resolution of Congress.
