The Winchester-Clark County Farmers’ Market is back in business for another season, and president Molly Stotts says there is a lot to look forward to in the coming months.

The market is open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon on Depot Street, and will begin opening on Tuesday nights June 20, Stotts said.

The market will also have several special event days beginning next month with Kids Day on June 3.

“We’ll be getting a grant from the hospital to be able to put on kids bucks day,” Stotts said.

That day up to 200 children ages 14 and younger will receive $10 to be redeemed at a later date at the market.

“Up to 200 kids will be able to get free tomato plants, and there will be face painting and other things,” Stotts said.

On June 27, the Clark County Health Department will hand out vouchers to people enrolled in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) food and nutrition program. Because of grant funding through the Community Farm Alliance, Stotts said the market will be able to double the value of a limited amount of the vouchers.

“That way, the farmers are able to bring in more money, and food insecure people get more food from their vouchers,” she said.

Vouchers for senior citizens will also be made available during the season.

On July 22 the market will celebrate Vegetable Festival, which is expected to be the peak of when tomatoes, corn and other vegetables are available.

Members from across the community will host the Farm to Table dinner, an annual fundraiser to benefit the market, July 29. Stotts said this year, the dinner is being expanded to accommodate 200 people.

The farmers’ market will host its fourth-annual Barbecue Festival Aug. 12, and the Fall Festival event is scheduled for Sept. 9.

While the fall festival has traditionally marked the last day of the market for the season, Stotts said that if the weather is good the farmers may continue selling until as late as October.
