Farmers Market cultivating youth interest on Kids’ Day

One way to get children interested in gardening is to give them a plant.

The first 200 children 13 and younger at the Winchester-Clark County Farmers’ Market Saturday will receive a free vegetable plant as well as $10 in vouchers for a future visit to the market.

Molly Stotts said last year’s Kids’ Day was a huge success.

“It was out biggest day last year,” Stotts said.

The market, which is open on Depot Street from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday through the summer, will have children-friendly events like face painting, food tasting and other activities.

Stotts said a couple children will have a lemonade stand as a fundraiser for the Clark County Animal Shelter as well.

Those participating in Kids’ Day must attend with a parent, she said.

The vouchers are good for anything edible at a future market,.

Though this is the only event geared specifically toward children this season, the market is always open to everyone, she said.

“I hope we always have kid-friendly things to do,” Stotts said.

Later this summer, the market will open on Tuesdays as well.

Other theme days include a vegetable festival in July, a barbecue festival in August and a fall festival in September.
