U.S. Rep. Andy Barr hosted an academy send off  Monday as seven young Kentuckians prepare to enter U.S. service academies.

Among those honored at the send off were two former Clark County students.

Christopher Michael Collins, son of Brian and Kristi Collins, a resident of Winchester and a graduate of George Rogers Clark High School, was appointed to the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Dalton Alan Carter, son of Heather and Marlin Carter, a resident of Mt. Sterling and graduate of Montgomery County High School, has been appointed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Carter formerly attended George Rogers Clark High School and resided in Winchester prior to the appointment.

Members of Congress may nominate a limited number of students each year to four of the five service academies.  After nominations are submitted, each Service Academy selects which students will receive an appointment to attend.  Attending a service academy comes with an obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation.
