Former pageant winner, husband arrested for burglary

A former Miss Kentucky Plus America was jailed Tuesday after she and her husband allegedly used a gun to take a pair of shoes.
Toniya Coles, 49, and Carl Coles, 54, of 4 Hart Ave., were arraigned Wednesday for first-degree burglary. The judge entered an automatic not-guilty plea for each and set their bond at $7,500 each. Both have been released on bond.
According to court documents, they entered a residence on Carolina Avenue around 11 p.m. Tuesday. The victim said a man and woman, later identified as the Coles, entered the home with a gun and demanded the return of a pair of shoes. Coles claimed someone in the residence stole the shoes.
The victim said the shoes were surrendered and the Coles left.
While a Winchester Police officer was on the scene taking the report, Toniya Coles drove up and stopped outside. The victims identified the Coles as those who entered the home, and they were arrested.
In a Facebook post Wednesday night, Toniya Coles said someone tried to steal her son’s shoes.
“… I had to go Detroit on them and got my sons shoes back…,” the post said. “…you don’t mess with my kids.”
Wednesday afternoon, the judge denied appointing a public defender and set a preliminary hearing for July 26, to allow them time to hire their own attorney.
First-degree burglary is a class B felony with a sentence of 10 to 20 years upon conviction.
Toniya Coles won the title of Miss Kentucky Plus America in 2013 and competed at the national pageant. Her platform issue was childhood hunger, and she started a program in Clark County called “No Child Left Hungry.”
