Boy Scouts making great people

I picked my boys up from Camp McKee Scout Reservation, a treasure right in our backyard (Montgomery County), last night after a week of Boy Scout camp.

Our family has been a part of the Boy Scouts of America in Winchester since 2006 and our commitment to scouting as been one of the best decisions of our lives. The leadership skills, character building situations and compassion for others that my boys have gained through this program is priceless — not to mention the practical knowledge and common sense life skills.

I am so proud of the men they are becoming, men who are trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. They love God and people. Their personal motto is “Do your best,” which is a hold-over from their first five years in Cub Scouts.

In about a year, they will begin working on their Eagle projects. Eagle Scout is the highest rank one can attain through the BSA program and is the only recognition from life before college that will be recognized on applications, resumes and reference letters for the rest of their lives. They are working harder than ever to achieve this goal. It has taken a lot of time and perseverance. Not many can say that they have that kind of focus.

I want to thank the individuals in the community who support scouting by volunteering to lead groups, buying popcorn, donating resources and encouraging the scout nearest you. This program is making a difference in the lives of young men and women in our community. Remember, every year we send a new group of scouts into the adult world and it definitely makes the world a better place.
