After two years of waiting and a few months of construction, Four Mile Road is finally open to through traffic once again.

Clark County Road Supervisor Kevin Wilson said the last of the asphalt went down late Monday afternoon and some of his workers were on site Tuesday doing some final clean-up work.

“I think everyone will be pleased with the end result,” Wilson said. “I’m glad it’s done.”

Four Mile has been closed to through traffic since April 2015 when the ground under the road settled following a heavy winter, torrential rain and flooding. As the ground settled, the road broke apart. The road was closed when it became impassable.

There were no homes in the closed section, and the road was still accessible from either end.

The bid for the project, as approved earlier this year, was more than $323,000; about $200,000 of that was for the steel needed to support the road, Wilson said.

Wilson said he’s not calculated the final cost of the project yet, as he is waiting on final bills to be submitted. 

Wilson used $85,000 from his department’s funds to finish paving other parts of the road.

“It was a perfect time to do it and get it done,” he said.

Wilson said he’s also waiting for a final word from the Federal Emergency Management Agency on how much of the project it will cover. FEMA will pay 75 percent of the project and the state will pay for another 12 percent, though when that money will be paid has not been determined.

FEMA had previously approved the project estimate of $227,000. The bid, though, was almost $100,000 more and Wilson said he isn’t sure which amount FEMA will pay on.

Hinkle Environmental Services of Richmond was the only bidder for the project.
