A new store in downtown Winchester showcases the work of local and regional primitive decor craftsmen.

According to Sherry Howey, owner and operator of the Patsey Mountain Company, 29 S. Main St., the company began as a way to market the crafts she, her husband and friends made together.

“We’re from Estill County,” she said. “We do some festivals there and the Daniel Boone Pioneer Festival here.”

Howey said the four partners began looking for a permanent place to show and sell what they have made and collected over the years. She said they ultimately settled on South Main Street because of the location.

“I really like the atmosphere of downtown here,” Howey said.

The Patsey Mountain Company sells a variety of home decorations and craft items. Howey said about 60 percent of the store’s inventory is homemade, including wax warmers and the wax for them, soaps, lanterns and wall hangings. Some of the items are made by Howey and her friends and family, others are made by local craftsmen.

In addition to the handmade wares, the shop also sells a variety of glassware, holiday decorations and other rustic or primitive decor items.

Howey said popular items at the shop right now are glass jar lanterns, wax warmers, candles and holiday trees made of grape vines.

While individual customers are welcome at the shop, Howey said the shop is also looking for events like weddings and bridal showers to decorate for. She said anyone who is interested in using the company for an event can contact the store at 859-420-9750 and schedule a time to come see what the store has to offer.

Alternatively, anyone can visit the shop during its business hours from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Howey said she will soon be extending the store’s hours to be open on Sunday as well.
