Two men were injured Monday evening in a head-on collision involving a dump truck on Irvine Road.

The crash happened near Hilltop Drive, about a mile outside the Winchester city limits around 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue Jr. said he beleives alcohol was a factor in the crash between a Honda Accord and a dump truck hauling coal ash.

Perdue said the Honda, driven by Christopher West of 108 Blueberry Lane, was traveling north when it crossed the center line and entered the southbound lanes, where it collided with the truck.

Both vehicles were heavily damaged in the collision, he said. The dump truck overturned, dumping its load all over the scene, he said.

West was flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in serious condition. The driver of the truck, Ricky Bair of Wellington, was transported to Clark Regional Medical Center with a wound to his head,  Perdue said.

Perdue said he believes West was under the influence of alcohol when the crash occurred.

Irvine Road was closed for several hours while the tons of coal ash were cleaned up, he said.

The dump truck was owned by the Allen Company, which contracted with East Kentucky Power cooperative to transport the ash from Dale Station in Ford to Smith Station in Trapp, where a landfill was constructed. The ash is the byproduct after coal was burned to make electricity at the now-closed Dale Station.
