Weekend Outlook: Haunted houses, haunted swamps and hikes
Published 9:51 am Friday, October 20, 2017
With Halloween a mere 10 days away, ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggity beasties are starting to appear around town.
Today and Saturday, Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation will host the annual haunted house and haunted swamp at the College Park gym. The lower level and the swimming pool are turned into the prime location for a good scare and a fright.
Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. both nights with Tiny Terror Hour, where the sights and sounds are less intense and more suitable for a younger crowd.
Beginning at 7:30 p.m., there will be a full festival for all including popcorn, face- and pumpkin-painting, games and inflatables.
While the festival is ongoing, the haunted house and swamp get cranked up to full effect for the adults and continue until 9:30 p.m.
Admission is $8 and tickets are available at Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation.
The Beacon of Hope Emergency Shelter is also hosting a haunted house this weekend from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 850 Bypass Road. The event, according to its description, will be child friendly and follows the path of a person who lost her mind and killed everyone at the shelter.
Admission is $10 at the door.
If you aren’t up for getting scared, there’s always getting out in nature to find sanity. At 10 a.m. Saturday, retired retired forest ecologist Bill Crankshaw will lead a tree hike at Lower Howard’s Creek Nature Preserve, 1945 Athens-Boonesboro Road. The hike will be about three hours long and will be moderately strenuous.
The hikes are free. To reserve a spot, call 744-4888.
