XC: GRC girls claims 2nd at regional meet

The George Rogers Clark High School girls cross country team finished second at the Region 6 meet Saturday at Lykins Park.

It was the second straight year the Cardinals finished runner-up. This year, GRC was just one point away from claiming a championship.

GRC finished with 60 total points, right behind Dunbar’s 60.

Julia Graves was the Cardinals’ top finisher. Her 21:32.20 was good enough to take fifth place.

GRC’s Rachel Puckett and Julia Pohl took 11th and 12th respectively. Emma Taylor finished 16th.

Maria Jackson and Campbell Taylor finished 20th and 21st. Emma Bowling finished 52nd.

Tates Creek’s Jenna Strange won the region championship with a tine of 19:21. Dunbar’s Caroline Inman finished second and Jewelee Holbrook ended in third place.

On the boys side, Lafayette took first place for the region title, edging out second-place Scott County and thid-place Dunbar.

GRC’s boys finished sixth, just three points back of Tates Creek and five points away from a fourth-place finish, which Woodford County claimed with 131 points.

GRC freshamn Cord Tackett was the top Cardinal finisher. His time of 17:39 was good enough for seventh place, just seconds away from a possible fifth-place finish.

Cody Cooper finished 17th, Jack Lootens 30th and Garrett Boley 32nd.

Hunter Raney earned a 50th-place finish, while Brandon Adams and Caleb Wilson finished 53rd and 58th respectively.

Dunbar’s Austin Mathews won the boys championship easily, with a time of 16:05. Second-place Ben Camuel of Tates Creek finished with a time of 17:19. Scott County’s Jaco Fryer finished third.
