GEORGETOWN — The Scott County High School football team made short work of visiting George Rogers Clark Friday in the first round of the state playoffs.

By the time Scott County had completed its first offensive play, it held a 21-0 lead. Scott County was never threatened, holding on to win 43-14.

“You can’t spot a team like that 21 points,” GRC coach Oliver Lucas said. “We just spotted them. Then we started playing defense and offense.”

Scott County took the opening kick-off 84 yards for the first score of the game. After a three-and-out, GRC punted and Scott County returned that kick 60 yards for a 14-0 lead.

The Scott County offense took the field with just more than eight minutes left in the first quarter. A play-action pass on the first play of the drive resulted in a 55-yard touchdown.

When the smoke cleared, Scott County had a 21-0 lead just four minutes into the game.

GRC finally caught up to the speed of the game, but heavily favored Scott County still proved to be too much.

The two biggest plays for GRC in the first half were a 41-yard pass from Pearce Nisbet to Nick Willoughy, and a punt from Nisbet where the senior was forced to evade rushing Scott County defenders and find a sliver of space to get off a 50-yard punt.

Nisbet was unable to return for the second half, but Dakota Puckett filled in admirably. He completed one pass for 18 yards and picked up 26 yards on four carries.

Nitavius Thomas finished with an impressive final line, gaining 107 yards on 20 carries. He also scored a pair of touchdowns.

GRC was threatening to find the end zone a third time when time expired in the fourth quarter.

“There’s a lot we can build on from this game,” Lucas said. “We’ve got to get better. We’re never going to experience this again. We’re going to get the underclassmen ready to play. We’re going to work hard. We’re going to look like a totally different team next year.”

Lcaus said the team should return 20 starters on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

GRC finishes the season 5-6. Scott County (9-2) hosts Henry Clay in the second round of the playoffs next week.
