The Clark County Fiscal Court voted unanimously Wednesday to join dozens of other Kentucky counties in a lawsuit against opioid manufacturers.

The fiscal court discussed the suit during its meeting two weeks ago, but decided to study the matter further.

The lawsuit, which would be filed by a group of law firms, would seek to recoup expenses related to opioid drug abuse, including law enforcement and incarceration. Clark County Attorney Brian Thomas said the lawsuit would be filed against pharmaceutical manufacturers including those that make painkillers including Lortab and oxycodone.

The terms of the suit specify the law firms would get 30 percent of any settlement, but there would be no cost to the counties if a settlement isn’t reached.

Thomas said about 35 Kentucky counties had previously voted to join in the suit.

The court also approved a resolution with the state to partially fund a bridge replacement on Morris Road. The funding through the state’s Rural Secondary Program would cover 80 percent of the project, up to a maximum of $65,760. The bridge in question spans Little Stoner Creek at mile point 1.9.

The resolution was approved unanimously.

In other action, the court:

— noted training incentives paid to magistrates Robert Blanton and Daniel Konstantopoulos.

— noted the removal of the courthouse tower and bell.

— approved amended standard operating procedures for the Clark County Detention Center.
