Tonight, I ventured to downtown Winchester’s historic Leeds Theatre for the first time in a long time.

If you don’t know me, you should know that I cut my teeth at that theatre. I received my first lead role in Leeds’ production of “Seussical the Musical” more than a decade ago and now have a degree in theatre from Morehead State University.

The theatre I grew to love as a child has changed quite a lot since I first performed there and with the recent renovation, I can honestly say it has changed for the better.

The current production at Leeds is “The Lion King Jr.,” and it’s one you definitely don’t want to miss.

From the costumes to the scenery to the sound quality (something Leeds has struggled with previously), all technical elements are impeccable.

I have seen the Broadway production in New York City as well as the touring show (twice) and Leeds’ production lives up to those standards, no exaggeration necessary.

I was particularly fond of the younger cast members who portrayed the bugs and it was heart-warming to see the older cast members treat them as equals so the sense of ensemble could remain.

These young actors have obviously worked incredibly hard on their passion and have once again brought the arts to the city of Winchester.

Following in the footsteps of Clark County actors Ryan Case, Mark Mozingo and Matt Long, these kids have that something special.

They might just be starting out but, hakuna matata, they are well on their way to contributing to the bluegrass art scene.

Do yourself a favor and go see this show which performs again Nov. 17-19.

The only problem you’ll have is stopping yourself from singing along.
