Healthier holiday desserts

The holidays seem to be a time for food, food and more food.

Eating is a healthy necessary part of life, but the holiday treats should not become so common place that they are eaten in large amounts all year around. Moderation is the rule of thumb.

During the holidays, food is often part of many traditions. Traditions are what make holidays different and special. Holiday treats should be considered special and reserved for these special times.

During the holiday season, limit the amount of high fat and very sweet desserts you serve. Instead, serve traditional desserts and treats that can be altered to make them healthier. For a great dessert that is quick, easy and lower in fat and calories you might want to try this Apple Cranberry Waldorf Salad:

Apple Cranberry

Waldorf Salad

1 cup chopped Granny Smith apple

1 cup chopped red delicious apple

1 cup diced celery

1 cup halved seedless green grapes

1 cups halved seedless red grapes

1-1/2 cups dried cranberries

1/2 cup chopped walnuts

8 ounces non-fat vanilla yogurt

2 Tablespoons honey

1/3 teaspoon cinnamon

Combine chopped apples and diced celery and put in a medium sized bowl. Add grapes, cranberries, and walnuts to the mixture. Stir ingredients together.

In a separate bowl, add the yogurt, honey and cinnamon. Stir together and pour over the fruit mixture. Cover and chill before serving. Y

ield: 8, 1 cup servings.

Nutritional analysis: 210 calories, 5 g fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 35 mg sodium, 41 g carbohydrate, 3 g fiber, 34 g sugar, 3 g protein.
